Sam Farlow and Stanford Lee will play for the USGA Senior Amateur title after each won two matches Wednesday.
It will be the first USGA final for both players.
Achenbach: Only match play could create this final
Lee beat Logan Jackson in 19 holes in the quarterfinals, and Stu Grendahl, 4 and 3, in the semifinals. Grendahl was playing in his first USGA championship.
Lee was 3 under par in the semifinals, including birdies on Nos. 8-10.
“That’s about as good as I can play,” said Lee, who played on the PGA Tour from 1976-1980
Farlow beat 1972 U.S. Amateur champion Vinny Giles, 4 and 3, in the quarterfinals, and Frank Ford III, 2 and 1, in the semifinals. Farlow, who lost in last year’s semifinals to eventual champion Mike Bell, was 8 over par in the semifinals, but Ford was 11 over.
“It’s an honor,” he said of playing in the championship’s final match. “I can’t believe I’m in the final. I feel like I’m going to wake up tomorrow and it’s going to be a dream.”
Lee was 2 down after 12 holes of his quarterfinal match, but won three of the next four holes. He made birdie on No. 18 to halve the match, then won with a par on the next hole.
Farlow was 2 under par in his quarterfinal match. He won Nos. 12, 13 and 15 to advance.
All four semifinalists earned exemptions into the 2008 U.S. Senior Open.
