PINEHURST, N.C. – Phillip Mollica and Ray Sheedy advanced to the finals of the North & South Amateur on a day when pars – and sometimes birdies – weren’t enough to win at Pinehurst No. 2.
In a match that featured eagles on consecutive holes, Clemson’s Phillip Mollica beat Australia’s Aaron Pike, 2 and 1. Pike made a hole-in-one on the par-3 15th to get within 1 down. Mollica reached the green on the par-5 16th in two shots and holed a 20-foot eagle putt to go dormie 2. The players halved the 17th to give Mollica – medalist at last year’s North & South – the win.

Sheedy beat Wake Forest’s Webb Simpson, 1 up, in a back-and-forth match. Simpson opened the match with a chip-in birdie on No. 1, but Sheedy won Nos. 2 and 3 to take a 1-up lead. Simpson took the lead again with birdies on Nos. 4 and 7. Sheedy responded with wins and Nos. 8 and 9 to take a 1-up lead at the turn.
The turning point came at the par-5 16th. Like Mollica, Sheedy eagled the par-5 16th to go dormie 2. Sheedy, a recent Charlotte graduate, rolled in a 45-foot eagle putt. Simpson won No. 17, but the players halved 18 with pars to give Sheedy the win.
