Thompson second-youngest AJGA champ

Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., became the second-youngest winner in AJGA history with her victory April 22 at the Aldila Junior Classic.

Thompson shot consecutive 74s at Treyburn Country Club in Durham, N.C., to finish at 4-over 148 for a one-shot victory.

Thompson was 12 years, 2 months and 12 days old on the final round. Current LPGA player Vicki Goetze Ackerman set the record for youngest AJGA winner when she won the 1984 Bluegrass Junior Invitational at 11 years, 11 months and 29 days.

Thompson, a sixth grader, entered the tournament No. 48 in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings.

Thompson also won the 2006 Doral Publix Junior Golf Classic. She is the younger sister of Nicholas Thompson, a former Georgia Tech standout who won the HSBC New Zealand PGA earlier this year on the Nationwide Tour.
