J.W. VanDenBorn has been promoted to the Director of Golf at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Athletic director Tim Hall announced Friday that VanDenBorn will now oversee both the men’s and women’s programs in a full-time capacity after previously serving as a part-time coach for the Kangaroo men’s squad the past four years.
“We very excited to be able to elevate J.W. to the Director of Golf/head men’s golf coach position,” Hall said. “He has the passion, dedication and determination to make the UMKC golf one of the finest programs in The Summit League and on a national level. We’re lucky to be able to keep one of our own student-athletes in the Kangaroo family for the years to come.”
The 2007-08 school year will mark VanDenBorn’s fifth as the head men’s golf coach at UMKC. Under his watch, the Kangaroos have finished in fourth place on three occasions (2004, 2005, 2007) at the Mid-Con Championships.
Prior to becoming head coach, VanDenBorn spent two seasons as a player and another as an assistant coach under former coach Bill Ross at UMKC. As a player, he captured individual medalist honors by winning the Southeast Missouri State Invitational.
Mike Rhoades, meanwhile, will remain in his current role as the head coach of the UMKC women’s golf program.
