Quail Hollow to get Wachovia boost in 2011

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Quail Hollow will have at least one big name to promote next year.

Rory McIlroy, the Northern Irish wunderkind who won his first PGA Tour title, is certain to play a starring role here in 2011. But what about Wachovia?

The Charlotte banking giant, title sponsor since the Tour debuted at Quail Hollow Club in 2003 and under contract through 2014, went incognito last year. A flagging economy, the stigma attached to federal bailout money and blistering congressional testimony conspired to send Wachovia running for cover.

But times are changing. As the economy rebounded and federal money was repaid, Wachovia has broadened its relationship with Quail Hollow. Johnny Harris, president of Quail Hollow Club, anticipates a “more traditional role” by next spring.

“We’re excited about what we believe is going to be their increasing involvement,” Harris said.
