PHOTOS: Storms rip through Doral Resort

DORAL, Fla. – Barely had things gotten under way at the Cadillac Championship when they had to be shut down. An impressive, fast-moving microburst came sweeping across Doral Golf Resort and Spa and sent everyone running for cover.

Only six groups had teed off, with the marquee pairings of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Graeme McDowell next at the 10th tee.

How ferocious was this storm? Consider a quick summation, through a few numbers:

2 – TV towers knocked down, one of them into the pond next to the ninth green.

1 – ShotLink tower felled.

1 – Double-decker grandstand toppled.

1 – 18th-hole “Monster Board” sent tumbling.

17 – Newly-planted palm trees uprooted.

52 – Ferocity, in miles per hour, of highest wind gusts.

3 – Cadillacs situated on stages in the 18th hole pond that were spared damage.

Of course, this isn’t to suggest that there wasn’t any golf played, because there was. Three different players, in fact, had made birdie at the soft, par-5 first hole – Thomas Bjorn, SSP Chowrasia and Anders Hansen.
