Stanford Intercollegiate draws 12 top-50 teams

The Cardinal bring a strong field to their home course for the Stanford Intercollegiate, setting up one of the best tournaments in the fall college slate.

USC looks to three-peat at the event, which includes a dozen teams in the top 50 of the Golfweek/Sagarin Ranking.

Autumn domination

The Washington Huskies, tabbed as the No. 1 team in the country by Golfweek, have yet to sweat out a close finish this year. Washington has beat out the runners-up in its first two events of the year by a total of 53 strokes.

The Huskies’ initial win, which came at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, came at the expense of Stanford, which will get the chance to take revenge at its home course this weekend.

This will be the strongest field Washington has seen early in the season.

Three’s company

Three former Stanford Intercollegiate individual champions will be looking to win for the second time when they tee off Friday.

UCLA sophomore Alison Lee will tee off in her second tournament of the year, defending her title after winning last year. USC junior Kyung Kim also won as a rookie, when she took the title over SooBin Kim by three strokes in 2012. And speaking of Kim, the Washington senior won in 2011 and returns this year for another victory.

Walk in the Park

USC’s big win this fall came Oct. 7 at the Windy City Collegiate, where it topped the likes of Northwestern, Iowa State and Arizona. It’s no coincidence that the Windy City marked the return of Annie Park to the Trojans’ squad.

Park missed USC’s first tournament of the year, the ANNIKA Invitational, playing in LPGA Q-School Stage II. She advanced to the final stage and went on to take medalist honors for the Trojans in Illinois.

Park returns for the Trojans this weekend, where she’ll look to beat out Northwestern once again, along with rival UCLA, top-ranked Washington and host Stanford.
