Ilonen reverses course with 67 at WGC-Cadillac

DORAL, Fla. – Making his debut this week in the WGC-Cadillac Championship, Mikko Ilonen has experienced every nook and cranny of the Blue Monster. And in Saturday’s third round, he may have cracked the code, shooting a 5-under 67 during Saturday’s third round.

It wouldn’t have surprised the casual observer that Ilonen was making his course debut after he played to a 7-over 43 on the front nine Thursday.

Since that disastrous start, Ilonen has clawed his way back not only to respectability but to the possibility of finishing in the top 10, which would be his best result in a WGC event.

“I’m sort of getting the hang of where you try to hit your tee shots,” Ilonen said after hitting 10 of 14 fairways Saturday. “I’m hitting more fairways now than in the beginning of the week because most of the time I was hitting driver, but there are a lot of 3-wood holes out there.”

The more frequent use of his 3-wood put Ilonen in positions to attack hole locations Saturday, which he had found difficult to do in the first two rounds.

“Ever since the front nine on the first day, I’ve been plugging along, trying to make something happen,” Ilonen said. “I’ve been really patient, 7 over on the front nine the first day, and now I’m 1 over.

“It’s the right direction, at least.”
