Sutherland cards 67 to take Champions Tour lead in Mississippi

Kevin Sutherland didn’t repeat his 59 performance from last season, but he did card a 5-under 67 to take the lead at the Champions Tour’s Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic.

Sutherland, who shot the first 59 in Champions Tour history last Augusta at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open, birdied three of his final six holes, and sits at 9-under 135 through 36 holes at Fallen Oak in Biloxi, Miss.

He leads by two shots over Tom Lehman, who had a bogey-free 66 that included a 50-foot birdie putt on the eighth hole.

Tom Pernice Jr. and David Frost are tied for third at 6 under. First-round leaders Joe Durant and Colin Montgomerie each shot 72 and are tied for fifth at 5 under with three others, including Scott Dunlap, who shot 65.
