Scott Harvey takes early Porter Cup lead ahead of collegians

After the first round of the Porter Cup, South American Amateur champion Scott Harvey holds a one-shot lead at Niagara Falls (N.Y.) Country Club. Harvey, 37, began his day with six consecutive pars, but rounded out the back nine with an eagle-birdie finish to shoot 6-under 64.

Harvey already has a strong amateur resume this year, thanks to the season-opening victory at the South American Am. He also earned a Masters berth in the U.S. Mid-Amateur. He missed the cut at Augusta National.

Harvey’s strong finish bumped him ahead of a group of very capable college players. He is one ahead of Virginia Tech player Trevor Cone, who went 4 under in his last four holes. University of Texas player Gavin Hall, a native of nearby Pittsford, N.Y., matched Cone at 5-under 65.

David Snyder, Sean Elliott and Blair Hamilton are tied for fourth at 4 under. Behind that trio, Anthony Maccaglia is notably among a five-way tie for seventh with a 3-under 67. Maccaglia graduated from Oglethorpe in the spring, a Division III school. He won an individual national title there and helped his squad to the team title in 2012. Maccaglia held the 36-hole lead at the Players Amateur earlier this month.
