Rahm wins McCormack Medal, earns U.S. Open and British Open invites

Arizona State’s Jon Rahm of Spain won the Mark H. McCormack Medal as the No. 1 player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for 2015, it was announced Wednesday.

The honor means that Rahm, who is about to begin his senior season for the Sun Devils, will receive exemptions into the 2016 U.S. Open and 2016 British Open, provided he remains amateur.

“I am honored by this award and excited about the exemptions it brings,” Rahm said. “I also feel great pride in being the first Spanish golfer to receive this distinction.”

Rahm was a first-team All-American as a junior, winning four times, and also tied for fifth at the PGA Tour’s Waste Management Phoenix Open in February. He was named the 2015 Hogan Award winner as the top male college amateur in the U.S.

Last week, Duke’s Leona Maguire of Ireland was named the women’s winner of the McCormack Medal.
