Hao Tong Li become the second consecutive Chinese winner of the Volvo China Open after carding a bogey-free 64 in the final round on Sunday to claim his first European Tour victory.
Li, 20, started the day two shots behind Felipe Aguilar and Lucas Bjerregaard and used four birdies on the front nine and four birdies on the back nine at Topwin Golf and Country Club to take the win in front of a hometown crowd.
Li, a member of the Web.com Tour, entered the week coming off a missed cut at the Shenzhen International and had failed to make the weekend in four of seven starts between the European, PGA and Web.com tours since the calendar turned to 2016.
“The start of this year has given me a lot of hard times,” Li said. “Even though I worked hard I still played badly, especially last week. I worked hard there and couldn’t control my ball.”
A birdie on No. 17 moved Li to 22 under and he waited to see how Aguilar would finish in the group behind him.
Aguilar, who held a two-shot lead at the turn, hit his tee shot on 16 into the water for a double bogey. With pars on 17 and 18, Aguilar finished in solo second, three shots behind Li.
Richard Bland, Marcel Siem and Lucas Bjerregaard tied for third at 18 under.
