Jackson defends Birmingham title

Tim Jackson, of Germantown, Tenn., shot a final-round 67 June 3 at the Country Club of Birmingham (Ala.) to defend his Birmingham National Invitational title.

Jackson – a two-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion – finished at 5-under 208, three shots ahead of Carlton Forrester, No. 10 in the Golfweek/Titleist Amateur Rankings. Jackson and Forrester started the day tied two shots off the lead of Talbert Griffin III, who finished third. Griffin shot a final-round 73 to finish at 1-under 212.

William Mitchell finished fourth at 2 over par. He recovered from an opening-round 78 with rounds of 69-68. He and Jackson were the only players with two rounds in the 60s.

Gayle Sanchez, No. 66 in the Golfweek/Titleist Senior Amateur Rankings, won the senior division by six shots. He closed with a second consecutive 72 to finish at 1-under 212. Bill Moor finished second at 5-over 218.
