Kulacz squeaks out Scratch Players win
GOLFWEEK STAFF

Rick Kulacz’s final-round 73 at Del Rio Country Club in Modesto, Calif., was enough to hang on for a one-shot victory at the Scratch Players Championship.

The Aussie, who started the day with a six-shot lead after a third-round 64, finished at 12-under 272, one shot ahead of Mu Hu. Kulacz was a quarterfinalist at the British Amateur earlier this summer.

Hu, who earlier this summer won his first AJGA invitational at the HP Junior Boys’ Championship, shot a final-round 67, his third consecutive round of 68 or better. Stanford’s Rob Grube, the 36-hole leader, rebounded from a third-round 76 to close in 64 and finish tied for third with Chadd Cocco.

Sihwan Kim (72), who tied Grube for the 36-hole lead and will team with him this fall for defending NCAA champion Stanford, finished T-5 with Cal’s Michael Jensen (72) and UCLA’s Lucas Lee (71), the Western Amateur medalist.
