Book review: The Sure Thing
At first glance, Eric Adelson’s retelling of Michelle Wie’s erratic young career looks like it will be a breezy two-hour read. But it quickly becomes apparent that the book will, in the immortal words of Donald Rumsfeld, become a “long, hard slog.”

During four All-American seasons at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., Charlotte Campbell got in the habit of decorating her shoes, uniforms and hats with rhinestones. Little did she know that her idiosyncrasy would inspire a business.

Book review: A Son of the Game
A town founded as a sanctuary for tuberculosis sufferers now serves as a haven for golfers facing a midlife crisis. Welcome to Pinehurst, N.C., created in 1895 by an undercapitalized visionary, James Tufts, and built to look like a small New England town.

Volunteer builds bridge for young fan
I’ve heard a lot of people who earn their paycheck in golf say “the industry” does not do enough to advocate on the game’s behalf. Well, I’ve never met “the industry,” but a recent experience at a PGA Tour event makes me wonder whether we’re asking the wrong people to be ambassadors for the game.

Kaufmann: Golf travelers pay the bills
During a recent trip, I talked with a hotel marketing executive who told me his property effectively has dropped the term “resort” from its official name. He reasoned that in the current political climate, it’s more palatable for business-meeting planners to say they’re scheduling off-site gatherings at an “inn” as opposed to a resort.

A round with a heavyweight champ
Thankfully, we’re not talking about a round in the ring. Wladimir Klitschko, the heavyweight world boxing champion, is intimidating everywhere else, but he couldn’t escape a persistent ribbing on the golf course. He joined Golfweek for 18 at PGA National.

Book review: Ancestral Links
There’s a recurring image in “Ancestral Links” of an aging, 6-foot-7-inch man trudging through the dunes at Ireland’s Carne Golf Links in worn FootJoys, stopping on the 17th tee, tugging on a green golf glove, teeing up three balls, playing out the hole with each ball, then plodding back to the tee to repeat the exercise. The image isn’t an apparition, though John Garrity seems to be chasing ghosts – specifically, his family’s elusive roots in Ireland and elsewhere. He’s an unlikely candidate for the job.

Book review: A course called Ireland
Forgive fellow golf writers their resentment of Tom Coyne. His well-reviewed first novel, A Gentleman’s Game, was adapted into a well-reviewed film, co-scripted by Coyne and starring Gary Sinise. (Player haters would note it went straight to DVD; more generous observers would admit they’d contract the yips for such success.)

TV review: ‘Uneven Fairways’
Charlie Sifford’s righteous anger is evident in that remark as he recalls the decades when he and other gifted black golfers were barred from playing in PGA tournaments because of a Caucasian-only clause. In response, these men traveled the country playing on hardscrabble munis in the United Golf Association – golf’s answer to baseball’s Negro League.
