In an effort to drive sales as well as participation in the game, Callaway Golf has started a Gas Giveaway promotion which offers a free American Express gas card with the purchase of one of three Callaway drivers.

The program is divided into three tiers: Customers who buy the FT-i (suggested retail: $499) from an authorized Callaway Golf retailer will receive a $100 gas card; the FT-5 ($429) is good for a $75 gas card; and the Hyper X ($299) comes with a $50 gas card. The cards won’t be issued at the time of sale, but will be mailed afterward. The giveaway is limited to one card per person and a maximum of five per household. The card will be issued in the name of the customer on the driver rebate form and will be valid for six months at any gas station that recognizes American Express.

“For years, Callaway Golf has introduced equipment designed to make the game easier,” said Joe Urzetta, senior vice president of sales for Callaway Golf. “Now we’re hoping to help make your drive to the course easier as well.”

Hartmarx Corporation has appointed Jerry Kaye as head designer of Dr. Martens and Lyle and Scott Vintage Apparel. He will report to Eric Prengel, Group President of HMX Sportswear, a New York-based subsidiary of Hartmarx that markets the brands.

Kaye launched his own design and brand consulting firm in 2005. His clients included a roster of brands such as Arnold Brant, Robert Graham and Levi’s. He served as men’s design director for Perry Ellis from 1993 to 2001.

Hartmarx produces and markets business, casual and golf apparel under its own brands, including Hart Schaffner Marx, Palm Beach, and Racquet Club. It also has certain rights under licensing agreements to market selected products under brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Perry Ellis, and Golden Bear. Hartmarx’s range of distribution channels includes specialty shops and department stores, value-oriented retailers and direct-mail catalogs.

In April, Hartmarx reached an agreement with Airwair International Limited and R Griggs Group Limited, holders of the worldwide license for Dr. Martens, to manufacture, market and sell a range of men’s and women’s casual apparel under the Dr. Martens brand.  The collections will be manufactured, marketed and sold by HMX Sportswear. The launch will feature men’s wear for fall 2009, with a women’s collection to follow in 2010.
