Bethune-Cookman University stole the show May 11 at the 22nd PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship at PGA Golf Club, with the Daytona Beach, Fla., school capturing the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s team and individual titles in convincing fashion.

The B-C women won their third consecutive Minority Collegiate title, with a 54-over 918 total to top Texas-Pan American by 16 shots. The B-C men finished with an 8-over 872 total to beat Jackson (Miss.) State by 17 shots. The Wildcats had finished second last year by one shot to Texas-Pan American

“The (men’s) team knew they could do better then last year,” said B-C men’s and women’s coach Gary Freeman. “A few of the boys have not had a chance to be on a championship team before, so that is very satisfying.”

B-C’s Carl Corbin won the men’s Division I individual title with a 7-under 209 total, including a 3-under 69 in the final round. B-C’s Becky Dowell shot 225 and won the Division I women’s title by one.

Fayetteville (N.C.) State won the Division II men’s team title for the third year in a row. Fayetteville’s Ian Milne led the waywith a 7-under 209 total to capture the Division II men’s title by two shots.

In NAIA, Johnson & Wales won the team title for the second year in a row, defeating the University of Texas at Brownsville by 77 shots with a 7-under 857 total.

Armando Favela of Loyola University Chicago won the independent men’s division with a 1-under 215, two shots better than Florida Atlantic’s Amit Odalyar.

In the independent women’s division, Florida State’s Sara Young finished with a 19-over 235 total to defeat Old Dominion’s Alexis Garduno by nine shots.
