UNLV wins Southern Highlands

No. 22 UNLV upset seven of the top 10 teams in the country in winning its own Southern Highlands Collegiate.

The Rebels shot a final-round 293 at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas to finish at 5-over 869, two shots ahead of No. 4 Charlotte (293). Top-ranked Georgia (298) finished third at 872, while No. 7 USC (298) and fifth-ranked UCLA (297) rounded out the top five.

UNLV won its second title of the year; it also claimed the Shootout at Angel Park in Las Vegas. The Rebels have won the Southern Highlands Collegiate in three of the past four years.

“This is a big win because of the quality of the field,” UNLV coach Dwaine Knight said. “It was an NCAA Championship-caliber field, which made the win that much more special. Regardless of the outcome, I knew going into today we would learn a lot playing with the No. 1 team in the country in Georgia and No. 3 Charlotte.

“Our guys now understand that sometimes you don’t have to play your very best to win, but you do have to gut it out, which is what we did.”

USC’s Rory Hie won his second career individual title on the first hole of a playoff with Charlotte’s Jonas Enader Hedin and Georgia’s Hudson Swafford after the trio finished at 3-under 213. Hie and Hedin shot final-round 73s, while Swafford closed with a 77 after starting the final round with a four-shot lead.

Hie is No. 27 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.

Final scores with relation to par from the Southern Highlands Collegiate, played March 7-9 at the par-72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas (Note: x-won playoff; y-played as individual):
