West: South Carolina, Vandy impress
By LANCE RINGLER Assistant Editor
TEMPE, Ariz. – Two SEC schools were sent west and are headed back east chasing a national championship. South Carolina and Vanderbilt, both seeded outside the top 10, managed to finish inside the top 10 at the NCAA West Regional and advance to the NCAA Championship at the Golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg, Va., beginning May 30. South Carolina, the No. 11 seed, not only finished inside the top 10, it won the championship. Entering the final round one shot behind UCLA, South Carolina posted a 10-under 278 to finish two shots clear of the Bruins. The Gamecocks had not finished better than fourth in 10 tournaments this year.
“It puts us on the map a little bit this year. Obviously we were under the radar coming into this event this year with the way we have played,” South Carolina associate head coach Bill McDonald said. McDonald is in his first season with the Gamecock program, and was brought to Columbia by his former coach and boss Puggy Blackmon. Blackmon, who coached McDonald at Georgia Tech, is expected to be named South Carolina’s director of golf in the future. Blackmon has not been on the road with the Gamecocks for much of the season and joined the program in September. He is expected to have the associate tag removed next year. For the Bruins, it is their fourth consecutive tournament finishing in second place. “We would rather win, but we are happy for South Carolina, they played great and we respect their win,” UCLA coach O.D. Vincent said. “We feel pretty good moving on.” Along with the Gamecocks and Bruins, also advancing are Southern California, Arizona State, Vanderbilt, Arizona, Stanford and New Mexico The final two spots were determined by a playoff. Oregon State, East Tennessee State and Wake Forest played in the morning wave and waited all afternoon to see what BYU and Colorado State were going to post. BYU started off quickly and moved into solo ninth for some time. Colorado State got close to the playoff number which was 25-under, but came up short. It looked as if it was going to be Oregon State and East Tennessee State grabbing the last two spots, but Wake Forest’s junior Chris McCartin went birdie-birdie-par on Karsten Golf Course’s closing three holes to push Wake Forest into the three-way playoff. The Demon Deacons went on to advance in extra holes with East Tennessee State, while Oregon State did not advance. Vanderbilt, under the guidance of first-year coach Tom Shaw who joined the squad after a successful stint at Tulane, posted the regional’s best 18-hole score with a final round 21-under 267. “For us to make it is a tribute to the guys on the team. They have played fantastic this week,” Shaw said. “This is great for my first year as a head coach to be part of this.” Vanderbilt advances to the NCAA Championship for the first time since the 2004 season for only the third time in program history. The top three ranked players in the country – Southern California’s Jamie Lovemark, Arizona State’s Niklas Lemke and East Tennessee State’s Rhys Davies – were in the field, but it was Arizona State sophomore Benjamin Alvarado, ranked 29th, posting a final round 6-under 66 to win his first collegiate title. His 18-under 198 total is a new 54-hole Karsten Golf Course record. “Ben was excellent all weekend, just like he has been the past four tournaments," Arizona State coach Randy Lein said. Alvarado, who made 21 birdies and an eagle, is 40-under-par in his last 13 rounds and finished in the top seven in his last four starts.
Penn's Chance Pippitone, No. 908 in the Golfweek Rankings, and BYU’s Daniel Summerhays earned the two individual spots. Summerhays returns to the course where he tied the NCAA low 18-hole round of 60 at the Ping/Golfweek Fall Preview.
