Cowgirls beats ‘Big Four’ in Arizona

Oklahoma State – led by midseason addition Jaclyn Sweeney (pictured) – beat a field that included the top four teams in the country in winning the Arizona Wildcat Invitational on Wednesday.

The Cowgirls were the only team to break 300 in all three rounds at a windy Arizona National layout, shooting 32-over 884 to finish two shots ahead of No. 2 Duke and No. 4 USC. Top-ranked UCLA finished sixth – 20 shots off the lead – after a second-round 321 that included four rounds in the 80s; Arizona State, No. 3 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished fifth.

Two-time Golfweek Player of the Year Amanda Blumenherst of Duke made birdie on her final two holes to shoot a final-round 73 and finish at even-par 213, three shots ahead of Sweeney (73) and USC’s Belen Mozo (68). It was Blumenherst’s third victory of the year and 10th of her career.

Sweeney joined the team the 15th-ranked Cowgirls in January after graduating from The Pendleton School in Bradenton, Fla.
