No. 19 Wake Forest wins without Webb
GOLFWEEK STAFF

Wake Forest came back from a 16-stroke deficit to win the General Jim Hackler Invitational Monday, and the 19th-ranked Demon Deacons did it while their best player was preparing for a PGA Tour event.

The Demon Deacons’ final-round 292 at TPC Myrtle Beach was the low round of the day by six shots and put them at 33-over 897, three shots ahead of No. 12 Florida State (298). Duke, No. 11 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot a final-round 301 to finish third at 37 over par, two shots ahead of host Coastal Carolina.

Wake Forest senior Webb Simpson, Golfweek’s 17th-ranked collegian, did not play for the Demon Deacons because he is playing in this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Fla.

Louisville’s Derek Fathauer shot a final-round 72 to finish at 1-over 217 and win the individual title by two shots over Augusta State’s Henrik Norlander (73).

Fathauer is No. 19 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.

Final scores with relation to par from the General Jim Hackler Championship, played March 9-10 at the par-72, 6,950-yard TPC Myrtle Beach in Myrtle Beach, S.C. (Note: y-played as individual):
