Assistant EditorNebraska is getting good at shocking the Central.
The 17th-seeded Huskers shot 306 Friday, and are in eighth place after two rounds of the NCAA Women’s Central Regional at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas. The top eight teams after Saturday’s final round will advance to the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship May 20-23 in Albuquerque, N.M.
“We have our work cut out for us on Saturday, and we are going to have to play some great golf against some great competition if we are going to advance,” Krapfl said. “Positioning ourselves among the top 12 teams will hopefully help us, because temperatures are going to be around 100 degrees again tomorrow, so it should help us to be playing in the early group.”
The Huskers’ last finals appearance came in 2006, when they entered the Central Regional as the 15th seed but finished eighth.
Allison Stewart shot a then-career-low 70 in the second round two years ago to key the Huskers’ charge. This year, her first-round 82 was thrown out, but the senior rebounded to shoot 75 Friday, the team’s second-best score of the day.
“It was good to get a great round from Allison Stewart,” Krapfl said. “We needed her to step up and play well for us today, and she did that.”
Sophomore JC Stevenson shot 72 Friday and is T-11 at 1-over 145. Senior Elli Brown followed a first-round 72 with a 79 and is T-37 at 151, the only other Husker in the top 60.
• • •
BRUINS ARE BEST: UCLA’s 293 Friday may have been 10 strokes worse than its first-round score, but it still gave the Bruins the best team tally for the second consecutive day. They are at even-par 576, six shots ahead of second-seeded Purdue.
Tiffany Joh’s second-round 70 was the team’s only sub-par score. Maria Jose Uribe and Maiya Tanaka both shot 73, while Sydnee Michaels contributed a 77.
UCLA is looking for its third regional title this decade; they also won in 2002, ‘04 and ‘05. A Bruins victory would also mark the third consecutive a year a California team won the Central after USC claimed the 2006 and 2007 titles.
• • •
CRASHING THE PARTY: Nebraska isn’t the only team seeded outside the top eight that is on pace for a trip to the national championship.
Eleventh-seeded TCU is in third at 9 over par behind the strong play of sophomore Valentine Derrey.
Derrey, No. 36 in the
Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot 70 Friday to finish two rounds at 137 and take a one-shot lead over Uribe. Derrey, from Paris, had an eagle on the 455-yard, par-5 fifth hole and three birdies.
TCU is on pace to match their best regional appearance in program history after the Frogs also finished third in last year’s Central Regional.
Tenth-seeded Texas is in fifth at 20 over par after two rounds on its home track. The Longhorns, being led by first-year coach Martha Richards, are looking for their first team appearance in the NCAA Championship since 2004.
• • •
OUTSIDE LOOKING IN: Three top-25 programs are outside the all-important top eight with one round remaining.
LSU, No. 24 in the
Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, is in ninth, two shots behind Nebraska. No. 15 Kent State is another two shots back, while No. 16 Pepperdine is seven spots and 12 shots off the cut line.
• • •
MOVIN’ UP: Third-seeded Alabama started the day in 13th place after a first-round 304, but matched UCLA’s 293 Friday to move into a tie for sixth.
