ASU beats USC in Pac-10 playoff

The team and individual titles at the Pac-10 Championship were decided in playoffs Wednesday, with Arizona State and Arizona’s Creighton Honeck scoring upsets to walk away with the trophies.

The 20th-ranked Sun Devils (364) and No. 3 USC (366) finished regulation tied at 15-over 1,435 at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif. Arizona State played the first playoff hole in 21 strokes compared to USC’s 23 to win its first Pac-10 title since 2000.

Cal (359), No. 49 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished third at 18 over par, one stroke ahead of No. 4 UCLA (358).

The tournament used a six-count-five format for team scores.

Honeck (71) and UCLA’s Kevin Chappell (72), No. 4 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished regulation tied at 3-under 281. Honeck, No. 239 in Golfweek’s rankings, made birdie on the first playoff hole.

Arizona State’s James Byrne, Cal’s George Gandranata and Stanford’s Rob Grube all shot final-round 73s to finish T-3 at 1 under par.
