Hie’s 62 leads USC at U.S. Intercollegiate
By RON BALICKI
Senior WriterSTANFORD, Calif. – Sparked by a first-round 8-under 62 from Rory Hie, USC surged into the lead Saturday at the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford Golf Course.
The Trojans followed a first-round 14-under 266 with an 8-over 288 during a windy and cold afternoon second round to stand at 6-under 554. Although USC, No. 5 in the
Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, was 22 shots higher in the afternoon, it still posted the lowest score among the 17 teams.
Host Stanford, No. 11, is a distant second, 18 shots back, at 12-over 572 after rounds of 279-293, while No. 3 UCLA is at 574 and California is 577.
Hie, a junior, also had a toug time in second round conditions, but shot 1-over 71 and leads at 7-under 133.
Much like his team, Hie takes a comfortable lead into Sunday’s final 18 holes, standing six shots clear of teammate Tom Glissmeyer. Another shot back at even par 140 is another Trojan, defending NCAA champion Jamie Lovemark, who shares third with UCLA’s Kevin Chappell. UCLA’s Lucas Lee, whose 69 was the best round of the afternoon, is fifth at 141.
USC led Stanford by 13 shots after the first round and the closest anyone came in the second round was 11 shots, that being Stanford midway through the front side.
“The guys played great in the morning and, while the scores may not show it, probably played better in the afternoon considering the conditions,” said USC coach Chris Zambri. “I think they really showed how tough they can be this afternoon.
“Rory had a fantastic day, especially his first round, but when you look at Tom and Jamie and what they did, you know it was a team effort.”
Hie’s opening round 62 was one stroke off the course record, shot only a few weeks earlier by Stanford senior Rob Grube during a practice round with teammates.
Beginning on the second hole in the shotgun start, Hie made birdie then closed the front side with three consecutive birdies. On the back side he added birdies at Nos. 11, 13 and 16, and closed out the round with a birdie at the opening hole. That gave him a four-shot lead over Glissmeyer, who had a five-birdie, one-bogey 66.
In the afternoon, Hie started with eight consecutive pars before making his first bogey of the tournament at No. 12.
“Everything was going right in the morning,” Hie said. “I really hit it solid and had my putter going. Conditions got a lot tougher in the afternoon. I made some bogeys, but I’m proud of the way I hung in there. I think 1 over in the afternoon was a pretty good score.”
Notes: Chris Pappert of Nevada had made a hole-in-one on the 215-yard, third hole during the first round. The ace was sandwiched between a bogey and a double bogey. Pappert finished with a 4-over 74.
