Double down: Denver wins by 11 in Vegas
GOLFWEEK STAFF

Denver has slowly crept into the national spotlight the past couple years, and on Wednesay the Pioneers scored the biggest win in school history.

The Pioneers, No. 12 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot a final-round 288 to finish at 6-under 858 and win the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Angel Park Golf Club by 11 shots over No. 7 Arizona. Kent State, 18th in Golfweek’s rankings, was third at 10-over 874, five shots ahead of No. 13 Tennessee.

“Of all the wins in our program history, this was perhaps the most significant,” Denver head Sammie Chergo (pictured) said. “To grab the lead in the middle of the second round in this field with all of these top-25 teams and to not give it back was something special.”

Denver junior Katie Kempter won her first college title, shooting a final-round 72 to finish at 8-under 208. Kempter made nine birdies and just one bogey for the tournament. Kempter, No. 83 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot a first-roud 67 to match her school record.

“I’ve come a long way and I can’t thank coach enought for giving me the chance to come and play Division I golf," Kempter said. "A lot of coaches didn’t want to take the chance. I wasn’t a real good high school player. I wasn’t a real good junior player, but she saw something in me and took a chance on me.”

Kempter’s teammate, senior Chelsea Benton, shot a final-round 69 to finish T-2 at 5 under par with Arizona senior Alison Walshe (70), Golfweek’s fifth-ranked collegian. Benton transferred to Denver this year after three seasons at Colorado State.

Denver junior Dawn Shockley (69), Tennessee’s Marci Turner (75) and Arizona freshman Alejandera Llaneza (75) finished T-4 at 2-under 214.

This is Denver’s third victory of the year after capturing the Topy Cup of Japan and Ron Moore Women’s Intercollegiate.

Denver won all four of its starts last fall before finishing 20th at last year’s NCAA Championship.

Final scores with relation to par from the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, played Oct. 29-31 at the par-72, 6,050-yard Angel Park Golf Club (Mountain) in Las Vegas (Note: y-played as individual):
