Dowling named Duke women's assistant

Kent State women’s assistant coach Jan Dowling has been named assistant coach for the Duke women’s golf team.

Dowling is the second full-time assistant coach in program history; she replaces Kalen Anderson, who took the head coaching job at South Carolina in January.

“I’m really excited about Jan joining our program,” Duke head coach Dan Brooks said. “She’s an assistant right now and she is absolutely dedicated to her chosen profession. I didn’t want someone who just was not really sure what they were going to do now that professional golf is over.”

Dowling graduated from Kent State in 2002, and returned to her alma mater as an assistant in 2006. She has helped Kent State to back-to-back Mid-American Conference, while guiding Kira Meixner and Kirby Dreher to the 2007 and 2008 MAC individual titles, respectively. The Golden Flashes are 15th in the current Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.

Dowling competed professionally from 2003-05 on the LPGA, Duramed Futures Tour and BMO Canadian Women’s Tour.

As a player, Dowling helped the Golden Flashes to four consecutive MAC Championships and three NCAA Regional appearances. She was a four-time first-team All-MAC selection and was named the MAC Player of the Year in 2000 when she earned her second consecutive individual conference title. Dowling was the 1999 MAC freshman of the year after helping the team win the conference title in its first year of existence.

Dowling, of Bradford, Ontario, was the 2000 Canadian Ladies Amateur champion and represented Canada in the 2002 World Amateur Team Championship. In October 2005, she competed in ‘Big Break III: Ladies Only.’
