Gal, Florida victorious at Mercedes-Benz

Fresh off advancing through the first stage of LPGA Q-School, Florida’s Sandra Gal led the Gators to victory Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Championship.

Florida, No. 6 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot a final-round 288 to finish at 13-over 865, five shots ahead of No. 16 Purdue. The Boilermakers also shot a final-round 288. Arkansas was third at 26 over par.

Gal, No. 23 in the individual rankings, beat Auburn freshman Cydney Clanton in a playoff for the individual title. The two finished regulation at 3-under 210 after Clanton shot a final-round 68 and Gal shot 70. The 20th-ranked Clanton was 4 under par on her final four holes with two birdies and an eagle.

“It was a strange playoff because (Cydney) Clanton hit her ball in a tree and we couldn’t find it,” Gal said. “She hit her ball out of bounds on her next shot and I was able to get a birdie.”

This was Gal’s third individual title. She has won the past two playings of Florida’s home tournament – the Gator Invitational. Gal finished T-5 at LPGA Q-School Oct. 6 to advance to the final stage.

Caroline Hedwall (68) and NCAA champion Stacy Lewis (71) finished T-3 at 2-under 211. Hedwall, a member of Europe’s victorious Junior Solheim Cup team, represented the Swedish Junior National team in this tournament.

Final scores with relation to par from the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Championship, played Oct. 12-14 at the par-71, 5,932-yard Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. (Note: x-won playoff; y-played as individual):
