In pursuit of AJGA player of the year honors, Cory Whitsett shot a 3-under 69 Saturday at the Ping Invitational to take a one shot lead over Anthony Paolucci (70).

Whitsett, the top-ranked player in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings who won the Rolex Tournament of Champions and Western Junior earlier this summer, made six birdies at Karsten Creek. He finished fifth at this event last year.

Paolucci, who lost to Whitsett in the finals of the 2007 U.S. Junior Amateur, birdied Nos. 15, 17 and 18. Earlier this summer, he won the Junior PGA Championship.

Third-ranked Jordan Spieth shot 73 and is third.

Cameron Peck, who is also in the running for AJGA player of the year honors after winning two invitationals and the U.S. Junior this summer, is not in the field.

In the girls’ division, four players share the lead at 3-over 75 – Jennifer Johnson, Tiffany Lua, Stacey Kim and Kristen Park

Johnson won the Rolex Tournament of Champions in July, while Lua finished runner-up.

Kim bogeyed Nos. 12-15, and made double bogey on No. 17, before making birdie at 18.

Park won the U.S. Girls’ Junior last year.

Just 13 of 30 girls broke 80.

Scores with relation to par from the first round of the Ping Invitational, played Oct. 11 at the par-72, 7,285-yard (6,273 yards for girls) Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.:
