Europe wins Junior Solheim Cup
GOLFWEEK STAFF

Europe won seven of 12 singles matches Wednesday at Bastad (Sweden) Golf Club to complete a 14-10 win at the Junior Solheim Cup.

The competition featured the top 12 girls from the United States against those from Europe. The overall series is tied 2-2, with each team having won twice on its home soil.

Current Solheim Cup team members Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Brittany Lincicome are past participants in the Junior Solheim Cup. Creamer helped lead the U.S. to victory in the 2005 Solheim Cup, while Pressel and Lincicome are making their Solheim Cup debuts this year.

The United States’ Sydney Burlison beat Sally Watson, 2 and 1, in the Wednesday’s first match, but the United States was never able to gain momentum. The Europeans claimed six of the next seven matches, and clinched the Cup when Audrey Goumard beat Isabelle Lendl, 5 and 4, in the eighth match of the day. The U.S. won three of the next four matches, but it was too late.

Europe’s Carlota Ciganda, Florentyna Parker , and Nicola Rossler were a perfect 3-0-0 in their matches. Ciganda is the British Ladies’ Amateur champion.

This is the second European victory at the PING Junior Solheim Cup. In 2003 at Bokskogan Golf Club in Bara, Sweden, Europe led 6 1/2 - 5 1/2 going into the singles matches. The two teams split the 12 matches, giving Europe a 12 1/2 -11 1/2 victory, the narrowest margin of victory to date.

U.S. Girls’ Junior champion Kristen Park, who notched a 2-and-1 victory over Europe’s Charlotte Kring Lorentzen in singles, went 3-0-0 for the United States in her first Junior Solheim Cup. Mina Harigae, No. 1 in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings, Vicky Hurst, Isabelle Lendl, Jane Rah and Allie White all posted 2-1-0 records.

Information from the AJGA was used in this report.
