Love to start season at Pebble Beach

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Davis Love III plans to play next week at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, his first tournament since he had surgery on his left ankle to repair torn tendons.

“I’m eager to get back into competition and get this year started,” Love said Thursday. “I have some goals I want to achieve in 2008 and beyond, so I am excited to get back into the mix.”

He has some catching up to do.

Love was No. 44 in the world ranking when he missed the cut at the Deutsche Bank Championship and was eliminated from the playoffs for the FedEx Cup. A few weeks later, he stepped in a hole during a casual round and severely injured his ankle.

He now is at No. 78 in the world and likely will be ineligible for a World Golf Championship for the first time in his career. He also has not qualified for the Masters, and would need to either win or get back into the top 50.

Love is a two-time winner at Pebble Beach and tied for fourth last year.
