Golf | PGA Championship | Trevor Immelman
Notes: Immelman makes morning move

Trevor Immelman had missed the last two cuts in majors, so to expect a good week out of the South African would have been a stretch, especially after his first-round 75. But Immelman is 4 under par since, including a 66 Saturday that included six birdies and two bogeys.

“I noticed that they were pretty much syringing the greens right up until the first group got up there and I was the second group,” Immelman said of the softer conditions earlier in the day. “Lucky for me the greens were so soft so I could shoot at it and roll a few putts in.”

Immelman hit 15 greens Saturday to go along with 30 putts, four better than the 34 he had in his 75. Immelman’s 66 moved him into 13th place. He will tee off in the 30th group Sunday, so he won’t benefit from the same softer greens. He will have a chance to record his lowest in a major, though. His previous best was a T-5 at the 2005 Masters.

Major Boo-boo: Boo Weekley's 65 wasn't just a near-miss at history. It showed he's learned how to play major venues.

Three of Weekley’s 11 rounds in majors this year have been in the 60s. Saturday’s 65 was his best in the majors, and second-best in all of 2007.

“It’s not a birdie fest at every golf course,” Weekley said. “I’ve learned in majors that’s how its starting to pan out. You have to keep it around par, you’re keeping yourself in the game.”

Weekley is looking for his first top-10 since his win at the Verizon Heritage in April, but he’s also not counting out victory, even with Woods atop the leaderboard.

“The good Lord knows that answer,” Weekley said when asked if Woods could be caught. “I couldn’t tell you. Anything’s possible. He’s human, ain’t he?”

“The last couple of weeks I felt my game come around,” Immelman said. When you have confidence in your game, you can go out there and play the golf course the way it’s supposed to be played and shoot some good scores.”

Deja vu: In 1994, the last time the PGA visited Southern Hills, Nick Price was at 8-under 202 and had a three-shot lead over Jay Haas entering the final round. After a third-round 69 this year, Tiger Woods has a three-shot lead over Stephen Ames with a 7-under 203. Price would go on an shoot a final-round 70 and win by six strokes over Corey Pavin. Woods is 12-0 in major when leading after 54 holes.
