Golfweek’s No. 1 junior Peter Uihlein is gearing up
for a championship run.• Some players took care of business on Day 1 of match play at the U.S. Junior, but others are going home early.
• The field of 64 is set at the U.S. Junior.
Who is in? Who is out?• Kimberly Kim leads the 64-player field into match play at the U.S. Girls’ Junior,
but second-ranked Vicky Hurst failed to qualify.
Saturday (Finals):•
Lone star: Whitsett wins U.S. Junior:
Fifteen-year-old Cory Whitsett ran away
with the U.S. Junior Amateur title Saturday, ending the dream run of
14-year-old Anthony Paolucci, 8 and 7, in a matchup of two Texas
teenagers.
• Park finds place with Jr. victory: Even Kristen Park didn’t think success would come this soon. Park defeated Ayaka Kaneko, 4-and-3.

Whitsett 5 up through morning 18:
Cory Whitsett has taken a 5-up lead over Anthony Paolucci after the
first 18 holes of the U.S. Junior Amateur finals. Last year’s champion,
Philip Francis, was 2 up after the morning round and held on for a
3-and-2 victory.

Kaneko, Park all square at Girls’ Junior: Ayaka Kaneko and Kristen Park are known as
steady players, but mistakes marred the morning 18 of their final at
the U.S. Girls’ Junior.
Friday (Day 3, Match Play):
•
Paolucci, Whitsett in U.S. Junior final: Texans Anthony Paolucci and Cory Whitsett will make up the
youngest set of finalists since 2004 when 15-year-old Sihwan Kim
deafeated 14-year-old David Chung.
•
Park, Kaneko to meet in Girls’ Junior final: Kristen Park and Ayaka Kaneko
almost let their semifinal matches get away Friday at the U.S. Girls’
Junior Amateur. That’s nothing new. Park and Kaneko, both of whom
advanced to Saturday’s 36-hole final, have all week come up with enough
late heroics to stay alive.

Paolucci stuns Uihlein at U.S. Junior: Anthony Paolucci is No. 257 in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings. This week, he beat Nos. 1 and 2.
Thursday (Day 2, Match Play):
• Hawaii KO: Kono bids Kim ‘aloha’: Kimberly Kim dominated the U.S. Girls’
Junior Amateur for three days, further cementing the idea that it would
take a lot to beat her. It only took 23 holes. Kim was eliminated
Thursday by fellow Hawaiian Stephanie Kono (pictured) in a grueling
quarterfinal match.

Paolucci still hungry at U.S. Junior:
If you’re looking for the secret to Anthony Paolucci’s success, try the steak and salmon with vegetables at LongHorn Steakhouse. Paolucci waltzed into the quarterfinals of the U.S. Junior Amateur on Thursday with a 2-and-1 victory over John Huh, and he’
s thanking his lucky meal.
• Brown beating odds at U.S. Girls' Junior: Sarah Brown was having enough trouble handling
Demi Frances Runas in her third-round match at the U.S. Girls’ Junior.
It was even worse for Brown’s father, Keith.•
Uihlein sneaks into Sweet 16: Peter Uihlein birdied his final two holes Thursday morning to beat Hunter Hamrick, 1 up, in the second round of match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur. “I dodged a huge bullet,” Uihlein said. Medalist Seung Yul Noh of Korea, meanwhile, is speeding through the bracket.
Wednesday (Day 1, Match Play):•
So far, So good for Graham, Guthrie: Wesley Graham and Luke Guthrie both figured they were in for tough opening matches Wednesday
at the U.S. Junior Amateur, but only one was right. Who had the tougher
day? Here’s a hint: “That was probably the most stressful match I’ve
ever played,” Graham said.•
Girls’ Junior down to Sweet 16: Kim Kim survived Day 1 of the U.S. Girls’ Junior. Next she’ll face Mary Michael Maggio in a battle of exponential nicknames.

Teachman had toughest tests: Tessa Teachman, 17, might be the best junior girl you’ve never heard of. She showed that this week against stiff competition.
Tuesday (Round 2, Stroke Play):•
Nine lives: Uihlein advances at Junior: Peter Uihlein made a 10 in the first round of the FootJoy Boys Invitational, then won the tournament. Tuesday, in the second round of stroke play at the U.S. Junior Amateur, Uihlein made a nine. •
Kim medalist at Girls’ Junior: Kimberly
Kim followed her record-tying 62 with an even-par 72 Tuesday at Tacoma
Country & Golf Club to finish at 10-under 134, two shots ahead of
Ha-Na Jang.
Monday (Round 1, Stroke Play):
•
White's 66 leads U.S. Junior: AJGA record-holder James White shot a 5-under 66 Monday to take a
three-shot lead after the first day of stroke play at the 60th U.S.
Junior Amateur Championship.
• Hannaford hopeful at U.S. Junior: Matthew Hannaford teed off Monday in the first round of the U.S. Junior, less than a year after undergoing his second heart surgery.
• Kim shoots 62, ties USGA record: Kimberly Kim shot 10-under 62 Monday in the
first round of stroke play at the U.S. Girls’ Junior to etch her name
in the USGA record books once again. Kim’s score tied Christina
Kim for the lowest 18-hole score in a USGA girls’ or women’s
championship.
Sunday (Previews):•
U.S. Junior Preview: David Chung entered the 2004 U.S. Junior
Amateur as an unknown, 5-foot-5, 105-pound 14-year-old. A few inches,
25 pounds and three years later, Chung has built a reputation as a
match-play wizard.•
U.S. Girls’ Junior Preview: Two of the favorites to win this week – Mina Harigae and Vicky Hurst are coming off dominating victories last week.
