Alabama rolls up Carpet Capital
GOLFWEEK STAFF

Alabama’s Gator Todd made birdie on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff Sunday to help the Crimson Tide beat South Carolina in a playoff and defend its title at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.

Alabama shot a tournament-low 282 in the final round at The Farm Golf Club to tie South Carolina at 5-over 869. Georgia Tech shot 4-under 284 to finish one shot back.

Georgia Tech’s Chesson Hadley won the individual title by three shots despite a final-round 74; Hadley opened the tournament with rounds of 65-69. Alabama senior Michael Thompson (pictured), the U.S. Amateur runner-up, finished second at 5 under par. Thompson has placed in the top 3 in his first two events this season.

The Tide played with four of the players who helped win last year’s Carpet Capital. The only new player, Matt Hughes, shot a final-round 67 in his hometown to lead Alabama’s charge. Hughes had no pars in his final 11 holes, making eight birdies and three bogeys.

“It was great how we won it today,” Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. “It was the first time we’ve had a come-from-behind victory. We’ve had the lead in all our other victories. We played to win today. I’m proud of how we played. We played fearless in trying to find a way to win. And we did.”

Alabama played without senior Joseph Sykora, who won medalist honors at the Topy Cup to lead Alabama to a second-place finish in its season debut. The Tide got off to a similarly hot start last season, winning its first three starts before finishing No. 4 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.

South Carolina’s George Bryan IV and Georgia State’s Joel Sjoholm, the European Amateur runner-up, finished T-3 at 4 under par.

Final scores with relation to par from the Carpet Capital Collegiate, played Sept. 14-16 at the par-72, 7,012-yard The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.:
