Wood highlights Euro Tour qualifiers

Sweden’s Oskar Henningsson survived six round of intense pressure to take the top card at the European Tour Q-School. The 23-year-old Swede virtually led wire-to-wire after he opened with rounds of 66-66-65 and eventually stormed to a four-shot victory over Spain’s Carlos Del Moral.

Henningsson stumbled briefly with a fourth round of 74. However, that was the only blemish in an almost error-free week. He returned closing rounds of 69-69 to finish at 21-under 409.

“To be the first guy to win the (Q-School) coming through all three stages is a great achievement,” Henningsson said. “It will give me a lot confidence going into the new season. I feel well prepared to go out on the main tour and make an impression.”

Danny Willett, a member of the 2007 Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup team, took the fourth card courtesy largely of a third round 63.

Veteran Joakim Haeggman turned back the years to regain status on the European Tour. The 1993 Ryder Cup player – the first Swede to play in the biennial match – shared fifth place with young Englishman Chris Wood (pictured), who finished fifth as an amateur at this year’s British Open.

Haeggman wasn’t the only veteran to regain European status. Andrew Coltart, who played on the 1999 European Ryder Cup team, finished in a tie for 12th place.

Former British Amateur champion Michael Hoey also regained his tour status. He took the eighth card.

Scotland’s Callum Macaulay finished 20th to be the only amateur in the field to gain one of the 32 cards on offer. Macaulay, who played collegiately at the University of Mississippi, finished second at last month’s World Amateur Team Championship to lead Scotland to the title.

Jonathan Caldwell, who played at the University of South Alabama and in the 2007 Walker Cup, finished in a tie for 29th to teak one of the last cards.

Former Duke player Nathan Smith finished T-33 to miss his card by a shot; Smith was the only American to make the 72-hole cut. Former USC All-American Rory Hie, who turned pro earlier this year, finished T-59.

Notables missing out included former Oklahoma State player Carl Suneson. The Spanish player was in pole position to regain his status but closed with a 75 to miss out by just two shots.

England’s James Morrison, who played briefly for the University of South Carolina, dropped four shots in his final four holes to fall back from 7 under to 3 under and miss out by three shots.

Portugal’s Jose Filipe Lima also failed to come through the six rounds successfully. He finished in a tie for 64th place.

Lloyd Saltman fell at the fourth round hurdle when he missed the cut along with former Texas Tech player Oscar Floren, 2005 U.S. Amateur champion Edoardo Molinari and veteran tour winners Peter Baker, Patrik Sjoland and David Carter.
