Assistant EditorWINDERMERE, Fla. – Jorge Campillo smiled his way around Isleworth Country Club for the 5 1/2 hours it took to play the first round of the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational.
Golf is fun when things go your way.
“I was playing good today so I guess there was no reason to be mad,” the Indiana senior said.
Campillo negotiated breezy conditions and a tough Isleworth layout to shoot 4-under 68 and share the first-round lead with Alabama’s Matthew Swan. The Hoosiers, No. 20 in the
Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot 1-over 289, two shots behind 11th-ranked Alabama.
After turning in even-par 36, the Spaniard birdied Nos. 10 and 11 and eagled the par-5 13th for a closing 32.
Campillo made chit-chat with Indiana coach Mike Mayer in between shots and grinned throughout the agonizingly slow round.
He’s had plenty of reasons to smile lately.
Sunday’s round was one more chapter in what has been a year-long tear that has seen Campillo rise to the top of the college golf world.
Campillo finished T-2 at the NCAA Championship and ended the season ranked 10th in the
Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings. He won the Big Ten Championship, took home Big Ten player of the year honors, and was named a first-team All-American. Campillo also won the Spanish Amateur this summer.
“You can make comparisons to Seve,” Mayer said of his star player. “His short game is spectacular. I don’t see anything holding him back.”
Mayer likens Campillo’s talent level to that of former Hoosiers Jeff Overton and 2003 PGA champion Shaun Micheel.
“I think Jorge’s better than either one of those,” Mayer said. “Hopefully in five years, he’s winning major championships. I think he has that kind of ability. I really do.”
According to Mayer, Campillo’s importance to the Hoosiers can’t be overstated.
While Campillo has been key to the Hoosiers’ success, the Spaniard’s game wouldn’t be where it is without his experiences in the Indiana program.
“It’s been a team effort with him since Day 1,” Mayer said. “It’s a process and a progression, and Jorge has progressed since he came to Indiana University. He’s a much better player because of his time with us.”
As for the future, Campillo was mum on his post-graduation plans.
“I haven’t made up my mind yet,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll be playing in Europe or here, wherever I can.”
Said Mayer, “We have a plan for after graduation, but right now, we’re focusing tournament by tournament.”
Instead of making a run at the U.S. Amateur title this summer, Campillo chose to play in the European Amateur this August, where he finished T-24 with a closing 4-under 67.
Campillo is unsure which event he’ll play this coming year.
“I don’t know yet,” he said. “I want to play the U.S. Amateur, but I wish to play the European Amateur. Maybe this year it’s my time to play the U.S. Amateur.”
Whether it’s his time to win at Isleworth remains to be seen.
