DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Liz Janangelo didn’t make it to Sunday last year at LPGA Q-School. It was a surprising finish from a player who enjoyed immense success as a junior and then later as a member of the Duke dynasty.

This year, Janangelo decided to go about things a little bit differently and so far it’s paying off nicely. Janangelo is tied for 11th at 4-under 284 Dec. 1 after rounds of 70-71-70-73. Seventeen players will earn tour cards following Sunday’s final round over LPGA International’s Legends Course.

After finishing in the dreaded sixth position on the Duramed Futures Tour money list this season, Janangelo headed to Estero, Fla., at the start of November to begin working on Bermuda greens. Last year the Connecticut native spent the winter in Florida at Red Stick Golf Club practicing on Bentgrass, not a good place to study for her final exam.

Heading into the week Janangelo played a warm-up event on the SunCoast Series at LPGA International. But instead of aiming to win the tournament, Janangelo worked on hitting shots under pressure that she might face in Q-School, regardless of whether or not it was good for her score.

The numbers last week were so insignificant Janangelo couldn’t even recall them – “a lot over.” She actually tied for 25th after rounds of 77-78-75. But that’s not the point.

“I think it helped me a lot,” said Janangelo of the unorthodox tournament approach. “In the scheme of things that event didn’t really matter.

One thing she did keep the same as last year is her caddie, veteran Worth Blackwelder. The two met several years ago at the U.S. Women’s Open when Blackwelder was caddying for Cristie Kerr.

“I certainly believe in Worth,” Janangelo said. “I think the biggest thing is that he can read Bermuda greens. He just tells me what to do and I do it.”

Easy street: Jane Park said she’s never been more comfortable at such a pressure-packed event. After carding her fourth consecutive round under par (68), Park now leads the field by six strokes at 14-under 274.

“I’m just on cruise control,” Park said. “This is the most prepared that I’ve ever been for a  tournament.”

Extra incentive: Yani Tseng, 18, posted the day’s low round, 66. The Taiwanese teen is in fourth place at 281. Her U.S. guardian, Ernie Huang, told her they’d go Christmas shopping if she notched six birdies in the fourth round. Tseng poured in seven.

“I can relax more,” said a smiling Tseng after the round, no doubt thinking of her wish list.

History lesson: Should amateur Shanshan Feng, 18, earn her card Sunday, she’d become the first woman from China to hold exempt status on the LPGA. Feng carded a 1-under 71 Saturday and is in a four-way tie for 16th at 3 under.

Down and out: Paige Mackenzie gave it a valiant effort with a 3-under 69, but it wasn’t enough to make the cut. The Washington grad finished at 8-over 296, missing the cut by two along with good friend Irene Cho (70). Other notables to hit the road early were Beth Bauer (+14), Jean Bartholomew (+7), Eileen Vargas (+7) and Ashley Prange (+11).

What you need to know: Veteran Q-School caddies refer to the scoreboard on Sunday as the “Wailing Wall.” Plenty of tears have flowed in front of that board over the years, and tomorrow won’t be an exception.
