British Columbia senior Dave Stewart made the most of his final day of collegiate competition.

He shot 2-under 70 Friday at Indiana National Golf Club in Plymouth, Ind., to lead the Thunderbirds to their first NAIA Championship. British Columbia shot a final-round 292 to finish at 4-over 1,156, 12 shots better than top-ranked Oklahoma Christian (292). The Thunderbirds started the final round with a slim three-shot lead over Johnson & Wales.

Stewart’s final round included six birdies, an eagle and six bogeys. He finished T-10 at 5-over 293, one of four Thunderbirds to finish in the top 10.

Blake Rowe-Sleeman finished second at 3-under 285 after rounds of 77-64-72-72, while Andrew Robb (75) and Cory Renfrew (77) finished T-6 at 290.

“Today, Dave just put us on his back,” said head coach Chris MacDonald. British Columbia is the first Canadian school to win an NAIA Men’s Golf Championship.

Point Loma Nazarene junior Sam Cyr won the individual title by five strokes with an 8-under 280 total. Cyr, of Makawao, Hawaii, shot a bogey-free 70 in the final round, his fourth consecutive sub-par round.

Cyr made match play at the 2007 U.S. Amateur Public Links.
