Summerhays makes N’wide history

BYU senior Daniel Summerhays shot 2-under 69 Sunday at Ohio State Golf Club’s Scarlet Course to win the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational and become the first amateur to win a Nationwide Tour event.

Summerhays, 23, finished at 6-under 278, two shots ahead of Chad Collins (69) and Chris Nallen (71). Summerhays birdied Nos. 10 and 12, then parred the final six holes for the victory.

Summerhays has 60 days to declare himself as a professional if he wants to be exempt for the rest of this season. The deadline is Jan. 1 for the 2008 season. Summerhays, who is a favorite to earn a spot on this year’s U.S. Walker Cup team, said he is undecided about his future.

The Walker Cup, a two-day event, begins Sept. 8, 55 days from now.

“I honestly have no idea what’s going to be best for me,” said Summerhays, nephew of Champions Tour player Bruce Summerhays.

One week earlier, Summerhays shot 8-under 280 at Sahalee Country Club – site of the 1998 PGA Championship – to win the Sahalee Players Championship by seven shots. It was the first national-level amateur title for Summerhays, who is No. 9 in the Golfweek/Titleist Amateur Rankings.

Summerhays never strayed far from the lead all week. He was in second place after his first-round 68, and held at least a share of the lead in each of the final three rounds.

The other All-Americans in the field didn’t fare as well. The tournament granted sponsor exemptions to all first-team All-Americans, but Dustin Johnson was the only other one to make the cut. Johnson, who recently finished his career at Coastal Carolina, shot a final-round 68 to finish tied for 50th at 7 over par. Johnson won the Monroe Invitational and Northeastern Amateur earlier this summer.

This was Summerhays’ second Nationwide Tour start. He shot 79-69 to miss the cut at the 2001 Utah Classic as a 17-year-old. That same year, Summerhays made it to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur and won his second consecutive Utah State Amateur.

Summerhays took a two-year church mission from 2003-2005.

“I think I shot like 42 that first nine holes when I got back,” Summerhays said. “It’s very difficult to come back from taking two years off. But I think the things I learned when I was in Chile as a missionary … made me stronger mentally, and it gave me more sense of purpose. It really allowed me to understand what it takes to be great.”

Summerhays finished fourth at this year’s NCAA Division I Men’s Championship and was ranked 11th in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings. He also tied the NCAA 18-hole scoring record with a 60 at the Ping/Golfweek Preview.

NCAA champion Jamie Lovemark almost beat Summerhays to the record. He lost a playoff to Chris Riley last month at the Rochester Area Charities Showdown. Lovemark missed the cut this week, the first time he failed to qualify for the weekend in five PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour starts.

“We’re pretty good out there on the college scene,” Summerhays said. “We’re all guys that aren’t afraid to take it low and who can play well on tough courses.”

Final scores with earnings and relation to par from the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational, played July 12-15 at the par-71, 7,141-yard Ohio State Golf Club (Scarlet) in Columbus, Ohio (Note: a-amateur):
