WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Following Friday’s third round at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championship there was one common question asked by players, coaches and spectators. “What golf course did Kevin Chappell play?” The UCLA senior had just completed a 4-under 68 in extremely windy conditions on a difficult Pete Dye-designed, 7,450-yard Kampen Course at Purdue’s Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. It was the low round of the day, no one else was able to break 70. Not only did the performance vault Chappell into the individual lead, it also boosted the Bruins into the top spot of the team standings with a round to play. Chappell stands at 6-under 210, four shots clear of Clemson’s Kyle Stanley (74) and Washington’s Nick Taylor (73). Second-round leader Billy Horschel is five behind after a 76. With Chappell leading the way, UCLA shot 10-over 298 for a 24-over 888 total. The Bruins will take a three-shot lead over USC (300) and second-round leader Clemson (302) into the final 18 holes. Another two shots back at 893 is defending champion Stanford, which posted Friday’s low round (296) to keep alive its hopes of becoming the first team since Houston in 1984-85 to win consecutive Division I golf titles. The Cardinal were 7 under after eight holes, but played No. 9 in 5 over and the back side in 10 over. “We’ve worked really hard all year to get ourselves in this position,” said Chappell, who has won once this season. “Now what we have to do is come out tomorrow, enjoy the moment, and finish the job.” First-year Bruin coach Derek Freeman said Chappell’s play was a confidence boost to the team. “When Kevin got under par early it added a level of security for everyone,” Freeman said. “Considering the conditions, the difficulty of the course and the situation, Kevin’s round was pretty amazing.” In looking toward the final round, Freeman said, “No doubt there’s going to be some nerves out there, but that’s okay. What we have to do is come up with a good game plan and then work on it shot by shot. Mainly, I’ll tell the guys to just go out there and enjoy the moment. They’ve put themselves in a position to win and as a coach, that’s all you can ask for going into the final round.” Clemson’s third round was somewhat like the previous day when the Tigers jumped into contention by shooting 11 under on its last nine holes after playing its first nine 11 over. Clemson played the front nine in 10 over Friday and the back side in 4 over. The key stretch was the final four holes, which the Tigers played in even par. USC was 12 over and UCLA 5 over in that same stretch of holes. “To me, that 4 over on the back was just as impressive as yesterday’s 11 under,” said Clemson coach Larry Penley. “We could have easily folded our tents. Instead the guys dug down deep and came up with another impressive performance. We just need to find a way to get started.” Probably the most notable thing about USC’s showing thus far is it has put itself in position to win with little help from its No. 1 player Jamie Lovemark, the defending champion and college golf’s reigning player of the year. Lovemark had the Trojans’ high round the first day (79), followed by a 75 and 78, which equaled the team’s high round Friday. “The way to win out here is to have five players who are contributing and I feel we have that,” said USC coach Chris Zambri. “Overall, we had a solid day today, but struggled coming in. “But we’re only three back and on this golf course that’s nothing. As Magic Johnson would say, ‘It’s winning time.’ And they’re in position to see if they can do it.” Chappell, who double bogeyed the 18th hole the previous day and was three shots behind when the third round began, made a statement early on. He made good par saves at Nos. 1 and 4, and birdied Nos. 2 , 5 and 8 to get to 5 under for the tournament. After a bogey at No. 9, he birdied Nos. 10, 12 and 13 to stand 5 under on the day and 7 under for the tournament. But the 484-yard, par-4 18th hole got him again. He closed with a bogey, but it was one that could have been a triple. Chappell pulled his tee shot and hit a provisional ball, thinking his first might be out of bounds. The ball was in play, about two feet inside the OB line, and while his lie was good, he had to stand on a tree root. His foot slipped on the root while he was hitting his second shot, causing him to push it well right into the knee-high rough about 25 yards short of the green. “I was lucky to find my ball in that rough,” Chappell said. “I wanted to just pitch out, but coach (Freeman) said he thought I could get it on the green.” He went with Freeman’s choice and his wedge shot landed on the green and rolled just to the back fringe, where he two-putted for what he termed, “one of the best bogeys I’ve ever made.” As he sat in the scorer’s tent, Chappell said it finally dawned on him what he just did on the day. “I said to myself, ‘Wow. That was a really good round,’ ” he said. “I’d have to say it was one of the top five rounds I’ve ever played. Now what I have to do is get a good night’s sleep and come out tomorrow and keep doing what I’ve been doing.” Considering the way the Kampen Course has been playing all week, that might be a lot easier said than done. And should UCLA hang on and win the title, it would be the school’s first since 1988. And for Chappell, a victory would make him the first Bruin to ever claim the individual title. • • • Ron Balicki is a Golfweek senior writer. To reach him e-mail rbalicki@golfweek.com.
