Nevada coach Merritt resigns

Nevada men’s golf coach Rich Merritt, who is being investigated by the NCAA for allegedly betting on sports, announced his resignation Wednesday.

“It’s been a difficult year for me and my family,” Merritt said in a prepared statement. “I feel it’s in the best interest of the program that I move on. I’ve made some errors in judgment that the athletic department was not aware of which negatively impacted the program.”

Merritt was suspended for three matches last fall when an internal investigation revealed he had provided no-cost meals to players and had provided an airline ticket to an athlete at no cost, according to an article in the Reno Gazette-Journal.

A university investigation into the sports-betting accusations found no evidence.

“I’m very proud of the successes of the student athletes on the men’s golf team both on the course and in the classroom,” Nevada athletic director Cary Groth said in the release. “After meeting with Rich, we came to a decision that it is in the best interest of the Wolf Pack men’s golf program and his family that he step down as the golf coach. I wish Rich and his family well.”
