WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – Frank Lickliter II is making Q-School look like recess, even if he doesn’t feel like talking.

Lickliter shot a second consecutive 10-under 62 Thursday at the final stage of PGA Tour Q-School and leads by a record nine shots. Lickliter, who started on the Crooked Cat course’s back nine, turned in 31, then eagled the par-5 first hole and poured in three more birdies, including a tap-in on his final hole.

Immediately after signing his scorecard, he left the property and declined comment. Further requests were also denied.

Talk about a runaway leader.

Playing partner Chris Stroud had this to say: “It was by far the best golf I’ve ever seen played two days in a row in my entire life. No question.”

Lickliter, who finished No. 139 on the PGA Tour money list this year, is at 20-under 124, the lowest score in relation to par after 36 holes since the PGA Tour began keeping Q-School records in 1992. His nine-shot lead is the biggest 36-hole margin since 2005 when Michael Allen held a six-shot lead. In 1997, Scott Verplank also led by six after 36 holes.

Moving toward the head of the class:
The day’s biggest jump came from Alejandro Canizares. The 2003 NCAA champ who turned pro last year shot 10-under 62 on the Panther Lake course to move from tied for 92nd into a tie for fourth. Canizares made nine birdies and eagled the par-5 18th.

Walker woes: Two players many expected to shine at final stage – Walker Cup teammates Chris Kirk and Colt Knost – looked gloomy after their rounds. Kirk posted rounds of 71-73 and is tied for 121st, while Knost is T-134 after shooting 75-70.

“I felt perfectly comfortable out there the last two days, so I don’t think nerves has anything to do with it,” said Kirk, who like Knost, advanced through Stages 1 and 2 to arrive here at Orange County National. “I feel like I’m really close to hitting the ball the way I want to. I’m not worried at all.”

Dustin Johnson, the other Walker Cup player in the field, is tied for 38th after a 5-under 67.

Slap shot: Darren Angel doesn’t look much like a hockey player, but he counts the greatest of all time as a friend. Angel, who posted three top-5 finishes on the Gateway Tour’s Desert Summer Series this year, teamed with Wayne Gretzky’s wife, Janet, in the Nationwide Tour’s BMW Charity Pro-Am at the Cliffs in May. The pair won the pro-am division with a whopping 44-under 242 total.

“It was all her,” Angel said. “I had nothing to do with it. She waxed everyone.”

Angel started the second round at Q-School in a tie for 70th, but moved into a tie for 24th after a 5-under 67 Thursday that included an eagle on Crooked Cat’s par-5 17th.

Bubble gets bigger: Yesterday, 27 players were inside the top-25 bubble. After play completed Thursday, that number had grown to 37.

Crane kick: Five sand cranes found a temporary home on Panther Lake’s ninth green this morning. By the time Bob Heintz reached the green, the cranes had dug into the green near the hole. A rules official was called in to fix the “divots.” Heintz then chased the cranes off the green.

“Something I’ve never seen before,” the rules official said.

Quote of the day: Craig Bowden, after emerging from the scoring trailer after a second consecutive 72 left him even par after two rounds, “Well, I’m only 19 shots back.” (Actually, 20, after Lickliter birdied his final hole to move to 20 under.)
