Assistant EditorWINTER GARDEN, Fla. – Jason Allred isn’t going to sit in his hotel room tonight and replay with delight the 8-under 64 he shot Friday in the third round of the final stage PGA Tour Q-School.
He and his wife of five years, Kimberly, are going to watch funny movies and think nothing of the two eagles and five birdies that put him in second place, five strokes behind red-hot Frank Lickliter II.
“We try to be intentional about renting funny movies and doing things to get our mind off of it,” said the soft-spoken 27-year-old. “I have a great wife. It’s nice to just have friendship and companionship on the road.”
Allred led the field with his 64 but still trails Lickliter, who followed up his blistering 62-62 start to Q-School with a ho-hum 4-under 68 to maintain the 54-hole lead at 24 under.
Lickliter, who bogeyed his second-to-last hole, declined an interview for the third consecutive day, but said he will speak about his torrid run through the final stage after Monday’s final round.
Playing in the same group on Orange County National’s Panther Lake Course, both Lickliter and Allred eagled the par-5 second from nearly the same spot on the green. Allred’s 210-yard approach was to a tough pin tucked on the far right side of the green.
“That was a great eagle,” he said. “I feel like it’s my natural shot right now. I did a good job of trusting it, and it worked out great.”
The long-hitting Allred set a gameplan early in the week to attack the nine par-5s between the Panther Lake and Crooked Cat courses, and he said he will maintain that aggressiveness the rest of the way.
“I’m really trying to get after them,” said Allred, who has four eagles on the week. “My goal is to play them aggressive and play solid everywhere else.”
Allred finished 74th on the 2007 Nationwide Tour money list with $81,071. He made 13 cuts in 29 events, including three top-10s and a season-best tie for 4th at the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic in August.
The Tenacious Tommy “Two Gloves”: If not for Allred’s 64, Tommy Gainey would have been crowned Friday’s medalist with his 7-under 65 on Panther Lake.
Known predominately for the fact that he wears two gloves when he plays golf and that he won the Big Break VII, Gainey (pictured, above) is impressing the field with his game and the numbers he’s posting.
Said one player’s caddie, “You see Two Gloves? Man, he takes a cut at it. Guy can play.”
Gainey’s 65 followed a 67-68 start, and he currently stands in third place at 16 under, a position he’d rather not think about.
“It’s six grueling days, and I’ve got myself in such a good position that I can’t let up,” Gainey said. “I’ve got to keep going after it.”
Gainey played in four Nationwide Tour events in ‘07 and missed the cut twice, but took away a tie for 8th at the Cox Classic in July.
Gainey has drawn upon his experience with the Big Break while playing in the final stage.
“Being on the Big Break, it’s pretty bad when you can hit a good shot and be eliminated,” said Gainey. “At least out here, if you do hit a bad shot, you have a lot of opportunities to make that shot up.”
Any takers?: Reynolds Robinson’s dream is to become a full-time caddie on the PGA Tour, and the 37-year-old was granted another step closer to that dream this week during the final stage of PGA Tour Q-School.
At the beginning of the week, Argentine Miguel Carballo walked into the pro shop at Orange County National in need of a caddie. Knowing his desire, Robinson’s superiors in the pro shop recommended him to Carballo.
“It’s huge. I love it. The people here know me well and they knew they weren’t throwing [Miguel] any old caddie,” Robinson said.
Carballo had a promising season on the ‘07 Nationwide Tour when he finished 31st with $177,711, but closing out his season with seven missed cuts in 10 events made him consider a caddie change.
“I thought it would be good for me to find my game,” Carballo said through a translator. “The caddie is like a tool, another club in the bag that can help you.”
Though he isn’t considering hiring Robinson full-time, Carballo appreciates the limited Spanish that Robinson speaks. During Carballo’s rounds, the two coordinate yardages in Spanish.
“Being around him has really sparked my interest to learn Spanish again,” said Robinson, who learned what he knows from a Paraguayan family friend he lived with in Phoenix. “There are a lot of good Hispanic players out there.”
Carballo birdied his last two holes to finish 2 under on the day. He stands at 5 under on the week.
Bubble boys: Through two rounds, there were 37 players inside the top-25 bubble. Through Friday’s third round, 32 Tour hopefuls were inside the top 25.
Quotes of the day: “What makes a good caddie is a good player.” – Victor Velasquez, Carlos Franco’s caddie.
“He doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” – Carlos Franco, in response to Velasquez.
