PGA Tour: Home, sweet Bonhomme

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – Andrew Bonhomme likes to sample a local brew in every country he visits.

“I’ve played in 32, so I’ve sampled a few,” he said.

The Australian hasn’t played in the United States in 10 years, though. That could change after his 67 Saturday at Q-School moved him up 40 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 25th at 10-under 278. The top 25 and ties earn their PGA Tour card.

Bonhomme knows he can’t start celebrating with 36 holes remaining. He’s played in 14 qualifying tournaments for various tours worldwide. This is his first attempt at PGA Tour Q-School, though.

“I figured now was the time,” he said. “I’m 35. If I didn’t try now, it would be too late. I had a good year in Australia, so I thought I’d try to come to America.”

Bonhomme won the money list this year on the Von Nida Tour, Australia’s developmental circuit. He’s also competed on the Australian, Japan, European and Asian tours, where he won the 1997 Vietnam Open.

Brett Rumford, another Aussie taking his first shot at Q-School, is also in good shape to get his Tour card. He shot 65 Saturday to sit in third place at 19 under par.

Rumford has played on the European Tour since turning pro in 2000, winning three times. He also won the 1999 Australian PGA Championship as an amateur.

Bonhomme had to advance through the first two stages of Q-School to get to Orange County National. He returned Down Under to win the Queensland PGA Championship between the first and second stages.

Bonhomme started Saturday tied for 65th, and made bogey on his third hole after teeing off on Crooked Cat’s 10th. He made two birdies on his first nine, then shot a back-nine 32.

He holed a flop shot for eagle from just off the green on the par-5 No.4. On the next hole, Bonhomme missed the green with a 9-iron in his hand, but holed the next shot for  birdie.

“I was telling my caddie I hadn’t had (a chip-in) all week, then I had two in a row,” he said.

Bonhomme completed his round with a 4-foot birdie putt on No. 9 after laying up off the tee on the short par-4.

Traveling will be no easy task if he gets his Tour card. Bonhomme’s hometown of Goondiwindi is four hours from a major airport.

Still leading: Frank Lickliter II had only three bogeys the first three rounds of Q-School en route to a 24-under 192 total.

He had three bogeys Saturday, and a double bogey, in his even-par 72 at Crooked Cat. Lickliter is still leading, three shots ahead of Jason Allred, who shot 70 to get to 21-under 267.

In the wrong direction: Bonhomme’s playing partner, Mike Wendling, also made a short birdie putt on his final hole of the day. He hardly looked happy, though. Wendling’s birdie capped off a 78 that dropped him 84 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 130th at even-par 288.

Big mover: Casey Wittenberg helped his chances of making his first trip to the PGA Tour with a 9-under 63 at Panther Lake, the low round of the day by two shots. He moved up 86 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 38th, one shot out of the top 25.

Wittenberg, who was followed again by former IMG/David Leadbetter Golf Academy classmate Paula Creamer, started his day with a birdie on No. 10.

He made five consecutive pars before making birdies on Nos. 16 and 17. He parred the next hole, then made back-to-back eagles on the par-4 first hole and par-5 second hole. He added birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 before parring his final three holes.

Feeling perky: Travis Perkins is trying to take the most difficult road to the PGA Tour. He had to advance through the first two stages of Q-School to get to the finals.

Last year, only eight players played all three stages and earned a Tour card. He’s close to matching that feat after posting his fourth consecutive round in the 60s, a 68 that put him in a tie for fourth at 17-under 271.

Perkins’ plight is made a little easier because of his Lakeland, Fla., locale. He played the first stage at his home course, Grasslands Golf & Country Club. His second stage site, Lake Jovita Golf Club, is about an hour from his home. Orange County National is even closer, but he’s staying in an RV about 10 minutes from the course.

“It definitely helps,” he said about being able to stay so close to home.

Perkins first came to Lakeland to play at Florida Southern, where his team won three NCAA Division II Men’s Championships and he was a three-time All-American.

You're so withdrawn: Robert Gamez, who almost won the final Tour event of the year to keep his card, withdrew during Friday’s third round because of a left wrist injury. Craig Bowden and Craig Kanada withdrew Saturday.

The list of WDs will only grow as the week progresses and players realize they aren’t going to improve their status. Last year, 13 players withdrew (10 during the fourth round or later) and another three were disqualified.

Bowden and Kanada both finished inside the top 150 on the 2007 PGA Tour money list, so they are guaranteed conditional status. Bowden, however, finished at No. 171.

Un-Seung: UNLV junior Seung-su Han shot 72 Saturday and is tied for 158th at 6-over 294. Unless he makes a huge rally over the final 36 holes, Han is looking at conditional status on the Nationwide Tour, which means about 15 starts.

Nationwide Tour rookies Kyle McCarthy and Brian Unk made 17 and 13 starts, respectively, after finishing T-139 among the 147 players that completed six rounds at 2006 Q-School.

Han has 10 days after Q-School to decide whether he wants to turn pro or return to school.

On the number: Geoffrey Sisk made an eagle 2 on his final hole of the day – No. 9 on Crooked Cat – to shoot 69 and move into a tie for 25th.

Quote of the day: “Dish sanitation technician,” Bonhomme’s description of one of his non-golf jobs earlier in his career. He was a dishwasher.
